Senior Technician - Facility Operations
Join our evolving team of creative problem solvers!
Our Canterbury Street facility is where ideas become real - where we prototype, test, and push systems to their limits across adventure recreation, construction, transport, and industrial product development.
We're looking for a Senior Technician to help shape and maintain this environment, with real scope to make an impact. In this varied, hands-on role, you'll take ownership of our workshop and fabrication areas, keeping the facility safe, organised, and running at its best.
If you're passionate about advancing a high-functioning technical environment and helping those around you achieve their best, we'd love to hear from you!
This is a permanent, full-time role based on-site in Christchurch. Occasional travel may be required in support of project work, both within New Zealand and internationally.
What you'll be responsible for:
Maintaining facility readiness - workshop layout, tooling, consumables, stores, and equipment availability. This includes leading the coordination of repair, servicing, and preventive maintenance across workshop and test equipment, including CNC machines, fabrication, instrumentation, data acquisition hardware, and test machines.
Managing asset registers, service records, calibration schedules, fault logs, and critical spares inventory - keeping information current and accessible. Alongside this, developing SOPs, work instructions, and practical knowledge resources that support consistent, safe operation across the facility.
Coaching engineers, technicians, and student interns in equipment use and safe work practices - leading by example, supporting competency development, and helping people grow in their roles.
Maintaining active communication with engineers, technicians, suppliers, contractors, and facility stakeholders to keep issues visible, resolve blockers early, and help projects move forward without unnecessary downtime.
Supporting procurement of tools, spares, consumables, and capital equipment, tracking maintenance backlog, and driving continuous improvement in facility efficiency, reliability, safety, usability, and 5S-style organisation.
Hands-on project work, the amount of this will vary from time to time depending on workload and as your specific skills and experience are required.
What you'll bring:
To thrive in our flexible, dynamic team, you'll take ownership of your work, enjoy contributing ideas, and have confidence to challenge the status quo. You're comfortable making independent decisions and embrace uncertainty and change as opportunities rather than obstacles.
The ability and passion to coach others, support training, and help build consistent ways of working - you lead by example and bring others along with you.
A critical thinking mindset, great communication skills and a proactive approach to safety, housekeeping, and operational discipline.
Broad hands-on experience in a workshop, testing, manufacturing, or technical facility environment.
Strong practical knowledge of workshop equipment, fabrication processes, and technical asset care, alongside a methodical, detail-oriented approach to organisation and documentation.
Experience coordinating maintenance, calibration, tooling, stores, and equipment readiness, with the ability to manage competing priorities and follow issues through to resolution.
Familiarity with technical test equipment such as load cells, sensors, data loggers, or electronic controlled test machines would be a genuine advantage.
A Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical), a mechanical trade qualification, or equivalent practical experience would also be an advantage.
