Prototype Development & Test Technician
Join our evolving team of creative problem solvers!
At Holmes Solutions, we work on a wide variety of projects that challenge conventional thinking. From structural and mechanical test systems to complex prototype development and validation, we take pride in creating robust, practical solutions that help great ideas succeed in the real world.
We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated Prototype Development & Test Technician to join our growing team in Christchurch. This is a hands-on role with real variety - you'll fabricate and assemble prototypes, set up and run test programmes, interpret results, and work closely with engineers to solve technical challenges across structural, mechanical, and electro-mechanical systems.
This is a permanent, full-time role based in Christchurch. Occasional travel may be required in support of project work, both within New Zealand and internationally.
Key duties & responsibilities
Planning and executing multi-phase testing programmes, including concept exploration, performance validation, durability assessment, and failure investigation.
Installing and operating instrumentation, sensors, and data acquisition systems to ensure reliable setup and high-quality data capture.
Collecting, processing, and presenting test data, and compiling clear records, reports, and methodologies.
Coaching and supporting team members, promoting quality and continuous improvement, and contributing to the development of our Test & Manufacturing capability.
Fabricating, assembling, and commissioning prototypes, test rigs, jigs, and fixtures from engineering specifications and drawings.
Troubleshooting technical issues during prototype builds and test programmes and working collaboratively to resolve them.
Managing development timelines, testing schedules, equipment availability, and material procurement across concurrent projects.
Supporting client demonstrations, witnessed testing, and technical discussions during design and project reviews.
What you'll bring to the team:
To thrive in our flexible, dynamic team, you''re able to manage your own time and workload effectively; confidence in contributing ideas and challenging the status quo; a willingness to make decisions independently when needed; and comfortable with navigating uncertainty and change.
Strong practical problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot effectively in a hands-on environment.
Broad engineering workshop experience, ideally gained in a product development, prototyping, manufacturing, or test environment.
Strong hands-on capability across manufacturing and fabrication techniques such as manual machining, welding, CNC machining, 3D printing, and precision assembly.
The ability to work from engineering drawings and specifications, while also helping develop practical solutions where the path forward is still being defined.
Experience with measurement and instrumentation systems, data acquisition, and operation of test equipment.
Good data handling and reporting skills, including confidence using spreadsheets and presenting results clearly.
Strong knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and quality control methods.
Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively with engineers, technicians, clients, and suppliers.
A strong commitment to safety, including awareness of workshop and laboratory risks and safe working practices.
The ability to coach others, support training, and help build consistent ways of working - you lead by example and bring others along with you.
A Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical), a mechanical trade qualification, or equivalent practical experience would be beneficial.
